The design is inspired by the church’s patron, Our Lady of the Assumption. It takes the form of a bright star (St Mary is also given the name Stella Maris and is looked on as a guiding star and a star of hope).

The lower part of the window contains midnight blues, purples and deep ultramarines, symbolising darkness and the earth, which brighten to shining golds and greens as the star ascends to heaven, its upper rays touched with rich pinks, orange and gold.

In the centre of the star is a circle or crown of twelve glass jewels, a reference to the twelve stars in St Mary’s crown. The base of the window holds the shape of a crescent moon.

‘And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars’.
